Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active 1,717-metre volcano in the Kintamani highlands and Bali's most popular peak for a sunrise hike. It sits inside a giant double caldera beside the island's largest crater lake, about 1.5–2 hours by road from Ubud.

Why Visit

It's Bali's most accessible "real" volcano: the climb is doable for begi

ers, and the payoff is sunrise above a sea of clouds with the sacred Mount Agung on the horizon. Ideal for an active adventure without any mountaineering experience.

  • Who it's for: first-time trekkers, sunrise chasers, and photographers.
  • Bonus: at the top your guide cooks breakfast — eggs and bananas — in the volcanic steam.

The Sunrise Trek

The classic route is a pre-dawn climb: you start at the base around 3:30–4:00 AM and hike about 2 hours by headlamp to reach the summit by roughly 6:00 AM for sunrise.

  • Difficulty — easy to moderate, fine for average fitness; the descent is on loose, slippery volcanic gravel.
  • At the top — active fumaroles vent hot steam, and guides boil eggs in the cracks in the ground for breakfast.
  • The view — a sea of clouds, the silhouette of sacred Mount Agung, and Lake Batur far below.
  • Bring a warm layer: the summit is 10–15°C and windy before dawn.

The Caldera, Lake & Hot Springs

Batur is not just a peak but a whole volcanic landscape inside an enormous caldera.

  • Double caldera — the outer caldera is about 13.8 km wide and formed roughly 29,300 years ago; the young Batur cone grew inside it.
  • Lake Batur — Bali's largest lake, a crescent in the easte caldera and a sacred water source for the island's subak irrigation system.
  • Hot springs — geothermal pools by the lakeshore, perfect for soaking tired muscles after the descent.
  • Black lava fields — frozen flows from the 1926 and 1963 eruptions, now a popular jeep-tour route.

Eruption History

Batur is one of Bali's most active volcanoes: major eruptions struck in 1917, 1926, and 1963, with the last notable ash activity in 2000.

  • The 1926 lava flow destroyed a village and temple at the foot of the volcano; both were rebuilt on the caldera rim at Kintamani.
  • In 2012, the Batur caldera joined the UNESCO Global Geoparks Network.

The Legend of the Giant Kbo Iwo

Legend says the gluttonous giant Kbo Iwo dug a huge well in exchange for food; the well filled with water to become Lake Batur, and the earth he piled up formed the volcano itself.

  • Balinese believe the water goddess Dewi Danu dwells in the lake and gove s the island's irrigation.
  • Batur is seen as Bali's feminine spiritual pole, balancing the masculine Mount Agung.

When to Visit

The best time is the dry season (April–October) and only at sunrise: the summit often clouds over by mid-mo ing, while pre-dawn skies are usually clearer.

  • In the rainy season climbs are sometimes cancelled due to slippery trails and poor visibility.
  • Go on a weekday — the trail can get crowded at sunrise.
