Nyepi in Bali — The Day of Silence: Date, Rules & How to Spend It

Updated June 28, 2026
Facts verified

Nyepi is the Balinese New Year, a Day of Silence: 24 hours of complete quiet and stillness when the whole island comes to a halt. The next Nyepi is 8 March 2027 (the date shifts each year with the Balinese lunar calendar). On this day even the airport closes, and no one — tourists included — may go outside.

What's closed

From 6:00 am on Nyepi, Denpasar airport closes completely for 24 hours — no flights land or take off. Shops, cafés and beaches shut, there's no transport, and lights are switched off or kept dim. Inte et and mobile service may be restricted in some areas.

Rules for tourists

  • Stay on your hotel grounds for the full 24 hours — going outside is not allowed.
  • Keep noise down, lights dim and curtains closed.
  • No driving, walking or swimming.
  • Local wardens — pecalang — enforce the rules.

Hotels stay open and usually run an indoor programme for guests, with meals and quiet activities. Ask about a 'Nyepi package' when booking these dates.

What happens around Nyepi

Nyepi is the climax of several days of ceremonies: the night before brings a loud parade of giant demon effigies (Ogoh-Ogoh), later bu ed, preceded by the Melasti purification ritual on the coast. It's spectacular, and many visitors come specifically for the eve.

Pla

ing your trip

  • Don't schedule an arrival or departure on Nyepi — the airport is closed and flights are rescheduled.
  • If your trip falls on these dates, pick a hotel with a programme and stock up the day before.
  • The Day of Silence is a unique experience — a hushed island and clear, starry skies — but it's a full shut-down day for all of Bali.
