The "best" area in Bali depends on your travel style: the island is large and getting around takes time. First-timers usually pick the south (beaches, infrastructure) and Ubud in the centre (nature and culture), often combining the two in one trip.
The south: beaches, clubs, infrastructure
- Seminyak — stylish beach town: beach clubs, restaurants, shopping and nightlife. A balance of relaxation and entertainment.
- Canggu — a laid-back surf area with cafés, yoga and an arts scene; a favourite with digital nomads.
- Kuta / Legian — budget, busy, close to the airport; for cheap and in-the-thick-of-it.
- Jimbaran — quieter, known for beachfront seafood.
The Bukit (southe
peninsula): surf and views
- Uluwatu — dramatic cliffs, world-class surf, trendy beach clubs and the famous temple. Calmer than Seminyak.
- Nusa Dua — gated resort complexes: clean, safe, everything close by. Ideal for a calm or family luxury stay.
Ubud: nature and culture
Ubud, in the island's centre, is about rice terraces, temples, yoga and crafts. The best choice if you're here for nature and culture rather than the beach (there's no sea here).
Quieter options
- Sanur — a calm beach on the east side, sunrises and a slower pace; good for families and older travellers.
- The north (Lovina), Amed, the Nusa islands — for getting away from the crowds: diving, volcanoes, authenticity.
How to choose
- First time: Ubud + one southe area (Seminyak/Canggu) — you'll see both culture and beaches.
- Calm stay: Nusa Dua, Sanur, Jimbaran.
- Surf and social: Canggu, Uluwatu.
Factor in logistics: many sights and other areas are 1–2 hours away by road.
