Features of the island of Nusa Penida

The map shows that Penida is larger in size than the other two islands of the Nusa group: Lembongan and Ceningan. According to reviews, its coastal waters with the richest underwater world are ideal for snorkeling. The rainy season lasts from November to March, but the climate is drier than Bali. Some travelers prefer to take a sightseeing tour during this period. Maps of the island of Nusa Penida are also sold in Bali. Local residents are open and friendly, willingly answering questions from guests. They mainly fish and collect seaweed. Tourism is a new direction for islanders.n

Attractions

Among the attractions of Nusa Penida are unique natural and man-made objects:

  • virgin forests;n
  • Hindu temples (there are about a thousand of them in total);n
  • bodies of water, including natural pools;n
  • rocky cliffs 200 meters or more high, stretching along the entire southe coast. The most beautiful places can be seen during an organized excursion. Tourists get to others on their own. It will take several days to get acquainted with all the interesting objects.

Teletubbies Hill

Green hills in the southeaste part of Nusa Penida, strongly reminiscent of the home of the famous Teletubbies. However, the children's television series was filmed not here, but in the UK. The road to the Teletubbies Hills runs through a beautiful mountain landscape. In some places you can see the coast and the sea.

Thousand Islands Viewpoint

Two viewing platforms in the south-easte part provide views of many spectacular rock formations in the turquoise sea. Ranked among the best on the island of Nusa Penida. Thanks to pictures and reviews posted on Instagram, they gained wide popularity. Descending to the landings via stairs takes 10 minutes.

Broken Beach

A giant hole on the far tip of the island of Nusa Penida in Bali, completely filled with turquoise seawater, with living corals at the bottom. You can't swim at Broken Beach due to strong currents, but it's a great backdrop for magical photos.

Angel's Billabong

Natural infinity pool with concrete stairs next to Broken Bay. The water overflows and it seems that it merges with the sea. What makes Billabong special is the unusual shape and color of the water. According to legend, one day an angel came down here - hence the name. Those who want to take a dip are advised to wear special slippers, since there are sharp stones at the bottom. This is only allowed during low tide. When the tide comes in, a wa ing sign appears.

Pura Dalem Ped, or Pura Penataran Ped

Temple complex on the territory of the village of Ped. Hindus believe that he has magical powers and helps to make any dream come true, for example, to get well, get rich, or gain talent. Megawati Suka oputri, who served as President of Indonesia from 2001-2004, prayed here before the elections. Pura Penataran is a public religious building (Ind. Pura Kahyangan Jagat) and consists of five snow-white temples: -Pura Segara;n

  • Pura Taman;n
  • Penataran Ratu Where Mecaling;n
  • Pelebaan Ratu Mas;n
  • Bale Agung. It is said that they were originally intended to honor the invisible protectors of the island of Nusa Penida in Bali - the spiritual entities wong samar. Tourists who come to see what Penataran Ped is like inside must wear a sarong and cover their bare shoulders. This rule applies to all places of worship.

Goa Giri Putri

The cave temple called Goa Giri Putri in the village of Suana (20 minutes drive from Penataran Ped) is the second most popular among Hindu believers. They come here to pray and draw water from a healing spring. The entrance is a narrow hole between the rocks. A stone staircase leads to a majestic, dark cave - one of the most beautiful and largest on the island. The atmosphere is almost mystical: there is a smell of incense, Hindu statues and small altars everywhere, illuminated by faint light. Stalactites of amazing shapes hang from the ceiling, with stalagmites reaching from below. When guests leave the temple, they are sprinkled with holy water, regardless of whether they prayed or just came for a tour and took photos. Everyone receives a talisman bracelet as a gift. You need to wear this jewelry until it falls apart on its own.

Tembeling

Pristine moss-covered rainforest right on the coast of Nusa Penida, filled with huge old trees and swimming pools. One of them is located next to a small temple. Walking down the incredibly long staircase that leads to Tembeling Beach, tourists feel like they are traveling back in time. To the right of this structure is the entrance to a cave co

ecting the forest with a rocky bay.

Pererenan Sunset Point

Place on top of a 200 m high cliff with stu

ing views of the sea. In the evening it is good to admire the sunset. Below there is a small observation deck for those who are unable to climb to the very top. Not far from Pererenan Sunset Point there is another attraction of the island - the Seganing waterfall, which the local population calls Sebuluh. Descending to it along a steep slope is a real adventure for the most courageous. The waterfall is small, but it is worth seeing how fresh water flows in different ways into the salty sea. There are also 2 small natural swimming pools.

Pura Car Paluang

Small and outwardly unremarkable, but still a unique temple worthy of the attention of travelers. Built for motorists. There are sculptures of cars in the open air, and local Hindus pray to them to avoid accidents. There is no entrance fee. Monkeys live in the forest near the Pura temple.

Pura Batu Bolong

Another interesting little temple that can be seen on the island. Pura Batu stands on a dark rock and looks directly at the sacred volcano Gunung Agung. Legend has it that an i

ocent girl was sacrificed here, thrown into the sea to be eaten by sharks. Bolong means "hole" and Batu means "stone".

Beaches of Nusa Penida

To get to some of Nusa Penida's beaches, you need comfortable shoes as you will have to walk on rocks. But some are located in more convenient places that can be reached by scooter. These include, for example, Crystal Bay.

Smoky Beach

Although the name of the place contains the word “beach”, in fact it was due to the extremely strong current between the low cliffs and stones. The waves hit the rocks with such force that the water shoots up in fountains several meters high. Smoky is located next to Angel's Billabong and Broken Bay.

Crystal Bay

Great for diving and snorkeling. The sea is clean, there are a lot of colorful fish and corals. Some tourists, judging by the reviews, manage to meet a rare moon fish. However, during the day, pleasure boats from the neighboring islands of Bali and Nusa Lembongan land at the bay, bringing many snorkelers. Mo ings and evenings on Kristal are calmer.

Atuh Beach

Surrounded by cliffs, with a high rock in the center. At the height of the season, few tourists relax here, and in the off-season it is completely empty. To get to Atuh Beach, you need to go down some steep steps. The entrance fee to the bay is 5,000 rupees. The beach offers sun loungers for rent, soft drinks and instant noodle soup. There are a lot of small sharp stones in the water, so you will need appropriate shoes.

Diamond Beach

A very beautiful place on the east coast: snow-white sand, sky-blue water, palm trees, white stones. However, Daimon Beach is not suitable for swimming, since the bottom is covered with corals and rock fragments. It’s better to take a photo from the observation deck at the top or going down on the shore.

Previously, tourists got to the luxurious Nusa Penida beach, risking their lives. In 2018, a very convenient stone staircase appeared.

Kelingking Beach

Located on the west coast. We recognize it on the map by an interestingly shaped cliff that juts out into the sea. It resembles the back of a dinosaur leaning towards the water. It’s not for nothing that the beach is labeled T-Rex Bay on Google Maps. A dangerous path leads to it, so cautious travelers prefer to admire Kelingking from above, taking “cool photos.”

Pandan Beach

One of Nusa Penida's beaches for swimming, with clean, light and fine sand. If you look at the map, it is located to the left of the busy Crystal Bay, but there are few tourists. Caution should be exercised when swimming here, especially in high waves.

Snorkeling with manta rays

In the sea around Penida you can find giant manta rays. It is a pleasure to look at these majestic animals. In addition, they are friendly and swim close to people. To see them, it is recommended to go to Manta Bay or Banana Beach. Other places to snorkel with manta rays: Ceningan View, Wall Bay, Manggrove Point. Photos underwater are amazing.n
