Candidasa and neighbouring Padangbai form a peaceful section of Bali's east coast, where the pace of life is noticeably slower than in the south. There are no loud bars or shopping malls — instead you find quiet white-sand coves, sheltered snorkelling, one of Bali's most ancient villages and the ferry port for boats to Nusa Penida, the Gilis and Lombok.
Why Visit
Candidasa is the district for those who want Bali without mass tourism: away from crowds, close to the sea and to Balinese village life. It works as a standalone destination for a couple of days (beaches + snorkelling + Tenganan) or as a transit base on the way to east Bali (Amed, Tirta Gangga, Lempuyang).
Beaches & Bays
Virgin Beach (Pasir Putih / White Sand Beach) is a beach hidden between green hills with bright white sand and turquoise water — one of the prettiest beaches on east Bali. A handful of warungs on the sand serve simple food with lounger rental. Reachable by car or scooter; weekends can get a little busy, weekdays are almost empty.
Padangbai Blue Lagoon is a secluded cove with clear water and excellent shore-entry snorkelling. Coral gardens, tropical fish and occasional sea turtles. Gear can be rented on the spot. Widely regarded as one of the best snorkelling sites on mainland Bali.
A local jukung boat can take you to nearby spots such as Tanjung Jepun — a coral wall for snorkelling and diving.
Tenganan Village
Tenganan Pegringsingan is one of the oldest villages in Bali and the home of the Bali Aga people — the island's original inhabitants who preserve customs predating the arrival of Majapahit culture in the 14th century. The village is famous for its unique geringsing (double ikat) weaving technique, in which both warp and weft threads are dyed before weaving. Only a handful of places in the world practise this.
Tenganan is 10 minutes from Candidasa. Entry is by a small voluntary donation. The village is a living community: residents weave, make baskets and observe rituals. Dress respectfully — this is sacred ground.
Padangbai Ferry Port
Padangbai is east Bali's main ferry hub:
- Nusa Penida — fast boat ~30 minutes.
- Lombok — car ferry ~4–5 hours or fast boat ~2 hours.
- Gili Islands — fast boat with a co
ection.
If you are catching a ferry, arrive in Padangbai early — sit on the beach, grab lunch, pop over to the Blue Lagoon.
