Jimbaran Beach (locals call it Muaya) is a long sweep of soft golden sand along Jimbaran Bay. It is one of the few beaches in south Bali where the water is calm, the entry is gentle and you can swim without worrying about waves. But Jimbaran's real fame is not the swimming — it is the di
er: along the shore dozens of seafood cafés set their tables right on the sand, grilling the day's fresh catch over coconut-husk coals as the sun drops into the bay.
Why Visit
Jimbaran Beach is one of those places that define a Balinese evening: feet in the sand, the sound of the surf, smoke from the seafood grill and a sunset over calm water. It suits a romantic date, a family evening (children can paddle in the shallow bay) and anyone who wants fresh seafood in an atmosphere no roofed restaurant can match.
Di
er on the Sand This is the beach's signature ritual. Seafood cafés (especially around Muaya Beach and towards Kedonganan) offer:
- Red snapper, king prawns, squid, crabs, lobster — sold by weight, your choice.
- Everything is cooked on a coconut-husk grill, giving the food its distinctive smoky-sweet aroma.
- Tables are placed right on the sand at the waterline. During the golden hour before sunset (~5:00–6:00 PM) candles are lit.
Tips:
- Arrive by 5:00 PM to get the best table with a sunset view.
- Confirm the price per kilogram before ordering — to avoid surprises on the bill.
- In high season book ahead — popular cafés fill up.
Swimming & the Beach
Jimbaran Bay is shielded from the open ocean by a reef, so the waves here are small — a rare condition on south Bali. The sand is soft and the bottom slopes gently. Good for:
- Families with children — shallow water and no strong currents.
- Mo ing swims — before the heat and the crowds.
At low tide the water retreats noticeably; the best swimming is at high tide. Check local tide charts.
The Kedonganan Fish Market
At the northe end of the bay, by the village of Kedonganan, a mo ing fish market operates. From 6:00 to 8:00 AM fishermen unload the catch: tuna, marlin, prawns, crabs. You can buy seafood here and take it to a nearby warung to be grilled for a small fee. The market is noisy, wet and utterly authentic.
Sunsets
Jimbaran faces west, and the sun sets directly into the bay — no islands or rocks on the horizon. The sky shifts from gold to pink, jukung silhouettes dot the water, grill smoke drifts along the shore. One of the best sunsets in south Bali, and you reach it without steep descents or long drives.

- The airport and Kuta — minutes away.
- Nusa Dua — ~15 minutes.
