Atuh Beach is a scenic cove on the east coast of Nusa Penida, separated by a rocky headland from neighbouring Diamond Beach. The descent here is shorter and easier, the water calmer, and the view of the sea stacks offshore is one of the island's most recognisable. It's the more relaxed alte ative to the dramatic but unforgiving Diamond.
Why Visit
Atuh gives you the same postcard scene of east Penida — white sand, turquoise water and rocks in the sea — but with easier access and calmer water. It suits anyone who wants not just to look but to swim and relax on the sand.
The Descent and Beach
A short staircase leads down to Atuh: the descent takes under 10 minutes and is noticeably easier than Diamond's. At the bottom is a sandy beach with warungs, loungers and shade. The bay is usually calmer, and in settled weather you can swim — but watch the waves and current.
What's Around
Atuh is part of the scenic cluster on the island's east.
- The Thousand Islands viewpoint — a panorama over the rocky islets and bays from above.
- The Tree House (Rumah Pohon) — the famous photogenic hut on the cliff edge.
- Diamond Beach — the neighbouring cove around the headland.
When to Visit and What to Know
The best time is mo ing in the dry season: soft light and fewer people. The drive from the northwest of the island takes 1–1.5 hours on roads that are rough in places.
- A driver or scooter is easiest.
- There's a paid entrance; warungs and lounger rental are at the bottom.
- Bring water, sunscreen, cash and sturdy shoes.
