Kelingking Beach (Pantai Kelingking) is Nusa Penida's signature postcard: a curving limestone headland that looks unca

ily like a Tyra

osaurus rex with its jaw open, a strip of white sand and turquoise water at its feet. The name means "little finger" in Indonesian, for the shape of the rock. The viewpoint sits on the ridge of the dinosaur's "back," and this is where most of the famous photos are taken — TripAdvisor once rated Kelingking the second-best beach in Asia.

Why Visit

This is Nusa Penida's main natural landmark and one of the most dramatic coastal views in all of Bali: a high cliff, vivid green scrub and a tongue-shaped beach beneath sheer walls. Most visitors come purely for the view from the top — going down is optional.

  • Who it's for: lovers of viewpoints and photography, and anyone who wants one of the island's strongest panoramas without a long trek.
  • Who should think twice: the descent to the beach itself is a serious physical effort and not for everyone (see below).

The T-Rex Cliff and Viewpoints

From the ridge viewpoint you get the classic shot: the dinosaur's "head" plunging into the ocean, its "body" curving around the bay, and the white beach far below. The best light for photos is mo ing, before the sun is in your lens and the day-trip crowds arrive.

  • The main viewpoint is at the trailhead near the car park; there are a few more platforms along the ridge.
  • Railings are patchy and the cliff edge is sheer — don't step to the very edge for a photo.
  • Manta rays and sea turtles are sometimes spotted in the water below.

The Descent: Hard and Not for Everyone

The trail down is not a stroll but a genuine cliff descent. It starts with concrete steps along the ridge, which then give way to slick rock, loose gravel and sections with rope handrails.

  • Time: about 30 minutes down and 45 minutes back up, slowly and with breaks.
  • Difficulty: high. You need grippy footwear, water and decent fitness; the climb back is brutal in the heat.
  • Don't descend if you're afraid of heights, travelling with small children, or it's raining — wet rock becomes treacherous.
  • A lift/elevator down to the beach has been under construction — check on arrival whether it's ru

ing.

Swimming Is Ba

ed — Take It Seriously Since January 2023, swimming at Kelingking has been officially **ba

ed**. Beneath the pretty turquoise surface run powerful undercurrents and rip tides that wash the sand from under your feet in seconds and drag people out to open sea. Rescue teams work here regularly, and tourists have died.

  • You may walk down onto the sand, but do not enter the water — even knee-deep is dangerous.
  • Waves can be large and arrive without wa ing; stay well back from the shore break.
  • Treat the ban as a real threat to life, not a formality.

When to Visit

The best time is early mo ing in the dry season (April–October): fewer people on the narrow viewpoint, soft light for photos, and less punishing heat for the climb.

  • In the dry season the water is at its most vivid and visibility is best.
  • In the wet season (November–March) the trail down tu s dangerously slippery — it's better to skip the descent.
  • Day-trip groups arrive around midday, so it's noticeably quieter at opening.

Plan Your Visit

Kelingking is on the southwest of Nusa Penida, roughly an hour's drive from the Toyapakeh/Banjar Nyuh harbours where the fast boats from Bali arrive.

  • From Bali — a fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida (about 30–45 minutes), then a car or scooter to Kelingking.
  • Roads on the island are narrow and rough in places; allow plenty of time.
  • Parking is paid, and there are warungs with water and food at the trailhead.
  • Bring: water, sunscreen, a hat, cash and sturdy shoes.

Combine Your Trip

Kelingking pairs easily with other Nusa Penida highlights in a single day.

  • Broken Beach and Angel's Billabong — striking rock formations on the west of the island, close to Kelingking.
  • Crystal Bay — a beach for snorkeling and sunsets.
  • Nusa Lembongan — the neighbouring island, an easy hop across the water.
