Nungnung Waterfall

Nungnung Waterfall (Air Terjun Nungnung) is one of Bali's most powerful, voluminous, and tallest waterfalls, crashing down a colossal 50-meter drop. • The 500-Step Challenge — a steep, well-maintained concrete staircase of 509 steps leading down into the canyon, offering a demanding workout on the retu climb.
  • Canyon Basin — a fresh, cool plunge pool at the bottom surrounded by towering rock walls covered in lush fe s and hanging vines.

History & Legends

  • Untouched Wilde ess — unlike many cultural temples in Bali, Nungnung has no historic myths. For generations, the deep gorge remained a completely wild, inaccessible pocket of nature known only to local villagers.
  • Tourism Development — to make this spectacular canyon accessible, the local gove ment built concrete stairs and viewing platforms in 1996, transforming it into a secure tourist trail.

Did You Know?

  • Nungnung is widely considered the most reliable waterfall in Bali, maintaining its powerful flow even during the height of the dry season.
  • The high-velocity impact of the water creates a windy microclimate, generating mist that covers everything within a 30-to-40-meter radius.
  • Climbing back up the steep stairs is equivalent to walking up a 30-to-40-story building.

Travel Tips & Practical Info

  • Physical Fitness & Footwear — climbing the 500 steps is strenuous. Wear ru

ing shoes or hiking sandals with good grip, as the stairs are damp from the waterfall's mist and can grow slippery moss.

  • Gear Protection — the powerful mist will soak you and your belongings within minutes. Bring dry bags or waterproof covers to protect cameras, phones, and drone equipment.
  • Admission & Fees — entrance costs IDR 20,000 (~1.2 USD) per person, and vehicle parking is IDR 5,000.
