Suluban Beach (Pantai Suluban), also called Blue Point, is a tiny cove at the foot of the tall Uluwatu cliff, reached by descending stairways past surf cafés and squeezing through a narrow rock grotto. The Blue Point name comes from the strikingly clean azure water between the rocks. It's the epicentre of Bukit surf culture: the famous Uluwatu reef break sits just offshore.
Why Visit
Suluban is about dramatic scenery, world-class surfing and the cliffside cascade of surf cafés. It suits surfers and lovers of unusual views and photos; for calm family swimming it's not the best choice.
What You'll See and Do
- The grotto and cove. The way to the water runs through a cleft in the cliff — at low tide a narrow beach of turquoise water opens up.
- Surfing. The Uluwatu wave is one of the world's best reef breaks; experienced surfers ride it — begi
ers should not.
- Clifftop cafés. A cascade of bars and cafés overlooks the surf line — a popular sunset spot.
When to Visit and What to Know
Come at low tide — otherwise the grotto passage floods and becomes dangerous; check the tide chart in advance.
- The descent is fairly steep, down stairways — wear proper footwear.
- The passage and bottom are slippery and rocky; take care.
- Swimming by the reef is risky because of the waves and currents — this is first and foremost a surf spot.
Combine Your Trip
- Uluwatu Temple with its sunset Kecak dance — nearby.
- Padang Padang, Melasti and Balangan beaches along the Bukit.
