Volcano Agung — Ascent into the Stratosphere

Mount Agung (Gunung Agung) is a majestic active stratovolcano, whose summit is the highest point on the island of Bali, reaching 3,142 meters above sea level. Agung has a pronounced, regular conical shape with a giant crater 450 meters in diameter, formed by alte ating layers of solidified lava, ash, and tuff. At the very peak, there is absolutely no vegetation, giving way to cosmic rocky landscapes. In clear weather, the summit offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the peak of Mount Rinjani, located on the neighboring island of Lombok.

The last major eruption of Agung occurred in 1963. The volcano remains active, with light clouds of steam and ash periodically rising above the crater. For the Balinese, this mountain is sacred — it is considered the home of the gods and the spiritual center of the island.

Important Info Before Climbing

  • Difficulty of the Route: Climbing Volcano Agung is one of the most exciting and physically challenging excursions in Bali. This trekking experience is perfect for fit travelers and mountain hiking enthusiasts ready to test their limits.
  • Private Format: The excursion is conducted exclusively on a private basis. You will have a comfortable air-conditioned car for pickup from your hotel and back, as well as an experienced certified local guide who will help you complete the trek at your own optimal pace.
  • Temperature Conditions: At the summit of Agung, the air temperature is 15–20 degrees cooler than on the coast, accompanied by strong cold winds. Be sure to prepare warm clothes (a windbreaker, hoodie, and long sports pants) — they will keep you warm while waiting for the sunrise.
  • Equipment and Footwear: Closed sports shoes (sneakers or hiking boots) with a good deep tread are strictly required. The descent takes place in daylight along rather steep, loose rocky slopes.

Good organisation — transfer on time, guide was responsible, water and tea at the summit. But the drive back after the descent took 3 hours, we were exhausted. Definitely don't bring kids on this one, we went as a couple. The sunrise was worth the sleepless night.

If you love mountains, you must climb Agung. The night path upward is meditative in itself — darkness, stars, silence, only the crunch of rocks underfoot. And then the world literally ignites before you. I cried at the summit. Photos won't capture even a tenth of what you feel. The guide was sensitive, walked beside me and never rushed. Definitely bring gloves and a warm hat.

BEST HIKE OF MY LIFE!! Seriously, Agung is next level. Hiked all night, thought I wouldn't make it, but the guide was so supportive my legs just kept going! And then BAM — sunrise! Clouds below! Rinjani in the distance! I was screaming with joy at the top 😂 If you love mountains — you MUST do this!

I'm not the most athletic person, but the guide adjusted to my pace, never rushed me once! We stopped for breaks, he told stories about the volcano and Balinese legends. At the summit I just sat and breathed — incredible energy of the place. Worth every step 💛

Tough trek, not for the faint-hearted. But if you push through, you see the whole island from above. Guide was solid, helped on steep sections. Descent is harder than the climb, btw.

Absolutely worth the effort. We hiked all night, legs were burning, but the sunrise at the top was something else. Guide set a comfortable pace, water and snacks included. If you're fit enough — just go!
