Mount Agung

The sacred stratovolcano Mount Agung (Gunung Agung), standing at 3,031 meters (9,944 feet), is the highest peak in Bali and the island's spiritual center. Regarded as the home of the gods, the mountain is the primary orientation point for the Balinese people, who sleep with their heads pointing towards Agung ("kaja" direction) to show reverence.

Key Highlights

  • The Absolute Summit — the highest peak at 3,031 m offers unparalleled panoramic views of the entire island, neighboring Lombok, and Mt. Rinjani across the sea. The ascent is physically demanding and requires peak fitness.
  • Sacred Slopes — the volcano's dramatic ridge lines are covered in alpine pine forests and volcanic scree, exhibiting the raw power of Bali's primary geological anchor.
  • Sunrise Above the Clouds — a spectacular dawn vista when the rising sun illuminates the easte coastline and reveals the caldera's impressive profile.

History & Legends

  • Pillars of the Earth — in Balinese Hinduism, Mt. Agung is believed to be a fragment of Mt. Meru, brought to Bali by the god Pasupati to anchor the island and establish the cosmos.
  • The Eruption of 1963 — the explosive eruption of 1963–1964 was one of the largest volcanic events of the 20th century, claiming over 1,100 lives. Searing pyroclastic flows devastated surrounding villages but miraculously bypassed Pura Besakih by just a few meters.
  • Recent Activity — a series of ash-venting eruptions took place from 2017 to 2019, temporarily halting flight operations across the island.

Did You Know?

  • Mount Agung is so sacred that during major ceremonies at the Mother Temple, Pura Besakih, all hiking activities are strictly prohibited for tourists.
  • The volcano's massive height influences Bali's entire weather patte , capturing rain clouds to supply water to the subak rice fields in the south and east.

Travel Tips & Practical Info

  • Besakih Trail — the most demanding path leading to the absolute summit (3,031 m). This strenuous trek starts around 11:00 PM and takes 6 to 7 hours one way.
  • Pasar Agung Trail — a shorter route that begins from Pura Pasar Agung and terminates at the crater rim (about 2,866 m). It starts around 02:00 AM and takes 3 to 4 hours.
  • Best Season — plan your trek between April and October during the dry season. The steep, loose volcanic gravel trails become hazardous and slippery during the rainy season.
