Mount Batur (Gunung Batur) is an active stratovolcano standing at 1,717 meters (5,633 feet) above sea level in the Kintamani district of Bali. Nested inside a massive double caldera formed thousands of years ago, Batur is famous for its dramatic volcanic landscape, a crescent-shaped crater lake, and its status as the island's premier sunrise trekking destination.
Key Highlights
- The Summit & Active Craters — standing at 1,717 m, the peak offers spectacular views of the sun rising above a sea of clouds with Mt. Agung in the distance. Hikers can observe active volcanic fissures venting hot steam at the top.
- Lake Batur — Bali's largest lake, occupying the easte part of the i
er caldera. It is considered sacred by the locals and serves as the island's primary freshwater reservoir for irrigation.
- Natural Hot Springs — therapeutic geothermal pools situated at the lake's edge. The mineral-rich waters heated by the volcano provide the perfect muscle relief after a steep descent.
History & Legends
- Volcanic Eruptions — the outer 13.8 km-wide caldera was created during a colossal eruption approximately 29,300 years ago. In mode times, major eruptions in 1917, 1926, and 1963 reshaped the valley floor. The most recent eruptive activity occurred in 2000.
- The Giant Kbo Iwo — local folklore credits the creation of Lake Batur and the mountain to a giant named Kbo Iwo. Tricked by villagers into digging a well, he dug so deep that water welled up to form the lake, while the excavated earth piled up to form Mount Batur.
- Sacred Goddess of the Lake — the volcano is regarded as the female spiritual counterpart to Mount Agung. It is dedicated to Dewi Danu, the goddess of the lake, who is believed to bless Bali's fields with fertile water.
Did You Know?
- Mount Batur and its caldera were designated as a UNESCO Global Geopark in 2012 due to their unique geological and cultural heritage.
- Due to the heat from the active vents, guides often cook eggs and steam bananas for breakfast in the volcanic steam fissures at the summit.
- The expansive frozen black lava fields at the base are remnants of the 1926 and 1963 flows and are now popular for 4x4 off-road jeep tours.
Travel Tips & Practical Info
- Start Time — treks typically begin around 3:30 AM to 4:00 AM from the base trailhead to reach the summit in time for the 6:00 AM sunrise. The ascent takes about 2 hours.
- Gear and Clothing — temperatures at the peak can drop to 10–15°C (50–59°F) before sunrise, and wind chill is common. Pack a windbreaker or light jacket, wear sturdy hiking shoes (the descent is on loose volcanic gravel), and bring a headlamp.
- Difficulty Level — the hike is classified as moderate and is begi
