Climbing Mount Ijen — 24 Hours of Adventure
Mont Ijen (Gunung Ijen, 2,386 m) is an active stratovolcano on the border of the Banyuwangi and Bondowoso regencies in East Java. In 2024, the Ijen volcanic complex was designated a UNESCO Global Geopark — a testament to its extraordinary geological and cultural significance.
Deep inside the crater lies Kawah Ijen — the world's largest highly acidic crater lake. Roughly one kilometer wide and up to 200 meters deep, the lake's turquoise water has a pH below 0.5 — hundreds of times more acidic than lemon juice.
After dark, the volcano reveals its rarest spectacle: liquid sulfur ignites at temperatures exceeding 360°C, producing the mesmerizing neon-blue glow known as "Blue Fire." This phenomenon is visible only in complete darkness, making a pre-dawn ascent essential.
Important Info Before Climbing
- Passport Control: Since the tour takes place on the neighboring island of Java, you will strictly need your original passport to cross the strait on the ferry.
- Temperature Contrast: At the summit (2,386 m), nighttime temperatures drop to +10…+15°C with strong winds. Be sure to bring a windbreaker, hoodie, or fleece.
- Respiratory Safety: Inside the crater, thick clouds of sulfur smoke are constantly emitted. We provide professional gas masks free of charge for your complete safety.
- Equipment: The trek begins from the Paltuding base camp (1,841 m). Sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes with good tread are highly recommended — the descent into the crater follows a steep rocky path.
