Balangan Beach (Pantai Balangan) is a long stretch of golden sand beneath green-topped limestone cliffs on the west of the Bukit Peninsula. It's a classic Uluwatu surf spot with one of the island's longest left-hand reef breaks and one of south Bali's best sunset viewpoints. A row of stilted warungs and cafés lines the clifftop, looking over a 700-metre run of surf.
Why Visit
Balangan is about surfing, a laid-back vibe and sunsets, not calm swimming. Surfers come for the long left-hander; everyone else comes for the clifftop view and the meditative sunset over the ocean.
What You'll See and Do
- Surfing. The left reef break works on mid-to-high tide; the wave is tricky for begi
ers.
- Sunsets. The best spots are on the cliff by the cafés; the sun drops straight into the ocean.
- The beach. Golden sand and turquoise water; the reef is exposed at low tide.
When to Visit and What to Know
The best time is the dry season and the late afte oon for sunset; for surfing, mind the tide.
- Access to the sand is by a stairway down the cliff.
- At low tide the bottom is rocky — reef shoes help; swim with care because of the reef and currents.
- Bring water, sunscreen and cash.
Combine Your Trip
- Suluban Beach (Blue Point) and Uluwatu Temple — south along the Bukit.
- Jimbaran Beach and its seafood — to the north.
- Padang Padang and Melasti beaches nearby.
