Crystal Bay is a bay beach on the west coast of Nusa Penida, named for its exceptionally clear water. It's one of the island's few beaches with an easy entry straight off the sand, and also its best snorkeling spot: a living coral reef begins just a few dozen metres out. The bay faces the island of Ceningan, and in the evening it has one of the best sunsets on the west of Penida.

Snorkeling and Marine Life

A coral reef teeming with reef fish begins 30–40 metres from shore, and sea turtles are a common sight. Alongside neighbouring Gamat Bay, Crystal Bay is considered the island's top snorkeling spot.

• Entry is easy from the sandy beach; masks and fins are rented on shore.
• Current. The bay itself is usually calm, but the current strengthens beyond it — don't swim out far.
• Mola-mola. In season (roughly July–October) the sunfish (mola mola) appears off Crystal Bay — but it's deep (20–30 m) and a diving, not snorkeling, sighting.

Sunsets

The bay faces west toward Ceningan, so Crystal Bay is a popular sunset spot: calmer in the evening, soft light, and the silhouette of the neighbouring island on the horizon.

When to Visit and What to Know

For snorkeling, mo ing in the dry season is best — calmer, clearer water; for the sunset, come in the late afte oon.

• There are warungs, gear rental and loungers on the beach; usually cash only.
• The bottom is rocky in places — reef shoes help.
• Protect the reef: don't stand on the coral or touch the turtles.
